DELICE
for Spyro and Euthymio
The plane always arrives late-night
To Alexandria from Athens
Then the long, tenuous dark-drive
Pitch black, slow along the isthmus
No matter, it is quick; the flight
They are thrilled like lovers
Back to their youth to discover
The clear, Xasteria sky; midnight
Into her arms, their sweetheart, the city
Imprinted time's patina; the kept memories
While they drive through her concrete ghettos
Of eras gone; surpassed by Satrap
To Monarch when Nasser would usurp
History parted; as river and green meadow.
